Bolivia Missions Trip Update

The team arrived safely last night and after being welcomed by some folks from the church, made it to our hotel for some much needed rest. Please pray for quick acclimation - most folks are feeling some affects of mild altitude sickness.Tomorrow morning we travel several hours by bus to Caranavi where we will be serving 86 orphans. We will be there for 3 days before returning to La Paz on Tuesday. Our route both days will most likely include what is termed by some as the world’s most dangerous road. (You can punch that in on youtube to see some clips - WARNING - I don’t recommend doing this till after you hear of our safe return if you have family members on the trip!!! For everyone else, it will provide ample motivation to pray for our safety!)This morning the team had a wonderful time marveling at the privilege of enjoying God and serving him with joy. May that be our testimony during our entire trip!

On May 16th, I had the privilege of baptizing Jone Kruger. As we were having some technical difficulties we were unable to share her video testimony Sunday morning. Please watch and be encouraged!

Update from Keith and Gene

From Keith to KingsWay:
As you may already know, my family and I relocated to KingsWay from Sovereign Grace Church in Chesapeake this past September to start a residency for evaluation and equipping to lead a church plant.  It has been an absolute joy for our entire family to get to know many of you and serve the Lord alongside you.  God’s grace is so clearly at work here, and we thank God for this opportunity!

Planting a church is a huge undertaking, and leading a plant requires a pastor to be well equipped for the task.  Over these past six months, God has been refining me and equipping me in key areas - particular the preaching of the Word and administration.  Apart from this season of receiving specific and much needed help, I cannot conceive of how God could have met me in the ways He has.  I am so thankful for these pastors and for each of you.  Your feedback has been very encouraging and helpful.  As it stands today, I am trusting God for additional, needed help - especially in the area of administration.  This has been an historic weakness for me, and God has highlighted it once again through the pastors and through my opportunity to lead the Resolved ministry.  Given the administrative demands of church-planting, I believe God has new convictions and habits to build into me.  In light of that, I am not ready to plant a church at this point. But I am trusting God to continue this work of training and equipping so that I will be prepared for the future.

Thank you for your encouragement and prayers… and for the ways you have embraced me and my family.  Please continue to join us in prayer - to the God who completes every good work He begins.  Please pray for wisdom, as we seek to discern the call God has on my life and to discern His timetable.  We count every week spent with you a blessing.  And we look forward with faith and joy to Christ: who has gone before us, and who oversees every detail of our lives.  As you pray for us, and as we pray for you, let’s take great courage that each of our days are in His hands… while we have breath, let’s all be looking for ways to bear eternal fruit for His kingdom.

From Gene on behalf of pastors:
Last month I asked you to give us feedback on how Keith’s ministry has impacted you.  Thanks those who have provided thoughts, which have been very helpful in considering the way forward.  The area most of you have connected with Keith is in his preaching, and many of you shared how his love for God’s Word helped and encouraged you in specific ways.  The single adults also experienced Keith’s leadership in the Resolved ministry.  He brings a love for community and evangelism.  Some shared some specific ways where his administrative leadership needed to improve.  A number of you have also received personal care & encouragement from Keith and expressed how wise and meaningful that care has been.

The reason SGM invests in church-based residencies is that the day to day life of a local church provides the best arena for seeing where a pastor is strong and where growth is necessary.  Your feedback has helped Keith and the pastors to establish two things. First, we agree with Keith that more preparation is important before planting.  This is not because we are reluctant to take a risk, but because we have seen that planting a church is one of the most demanding tasks a pastor can undertake.  Making sure he is prepared from the beginning is a practical way we can extend care to Keith & his family and confidence to those participating in the church plant.  So your input was important to the decision to postpone the church plant.  Second, the pastors recognize significant gifts in preaching and leadership in Keith’s life that we believe will position him to be an effective church planter.  He has a gift of faith and the ability to care for people along with an evangelistic heart to reach the lost.  Since Keith is receiving care and training from the pastors with a genuine and humble heart, we believe he is in process to be prepared to plant a church.  What a joy it would be to send a team from KingsWay to impact another city with the Gospel!  But since the funds SGM is providing for Keith’s residency ends in May, we will need to trust God for resources to make that happen.  We’ll talk more about that in a couple of weeks in relation to our partnership fund, but please pray with us as we seek clarity and provision for this next step.  Thanks!

Sunday Meeting Canceled!

Church family and friends,

God has a way of changing our plans at times, doesn’t he? After being unable to meet last weekend, I was especially looking forward to meeting together tomorrow. Sunday is my favorite day of the week!

Due to the continued inclement weather, however, all Saturday and Sunday events have been cancelled. I’m grateful that ultimately the weather testifies to our Father’s sovereign control over all things (Ps. 147:16), reminding us of the divine power and authority at work in every detail of our lives. No matter the situation, He’s on the throne!

Here are a couple suggestions for redeeming the time this weekend:

  1. Gather as a family to sing, read Scripture or pray together. It doesn’t have to be formal. Have the youngest family member read a few verses (Ps. 145-150 are good places to start!), then talk about what they say about God, our need for Him, and His care for us.
  2. Invite a friend or neighbor to come over for a movie or to watch the Superbowl. Snow days are a great opportunity to reach out to unbelievers with the love of Jesus.
  3. Throw a few logs in the fireplace and dive into a good devotional book that will help you know and love the Savior. If you’re like me, there’s a large “waiting to be read” stack on the bookshelf. We’ll see how far I can get through C.S. Lewis’ Screwtape Letters!
  4. FOR GUYS ONLY - Get up early and make breakfast for your family or roommates. I personally recommend a good Southern approach, including omelets, grits, bacon and toast.

I pray God refreshes each of you this weekend as we rest in His sovereignty. As my good friend Gene would say, “Snow is God’s way of inserting a little margin into our lives.” And for that I give thanks!

Grace to you,
Matthew

Bolivia Missions Application Deadline
Also, due to the cancelation, the Bolivia Missions Trip application deadline and team meeting have been postponed from this Sunday to next Sunday, February 14th. The meeting will be at noon, following the Sunday Morning Meeting.

The Goldsworthy Trilogy

The Goldsworthy Trilogy is an outstanding collection of three books on Biblical Theology by Graeme Goldsworthy.  Each book looks at a specific genre of Biblical literature in order to see its place within the whole of Scripture by seeing Jesus throughout each one.The Gospel & Kingdom examines the Old Testament history of Israel, The Gospel & Wisdom examines Job, Solomon’s writings, and some other wisdom writings sprinkled throughout Scripture, and The Gospel & Revelation looks at Scripture’s final letter.I heartily commend the Goldsworthy Trilogy for a deeper study of seeing Jesus throughout the various parts of Scripture.  (I also recommend God’s Big Picture for a basic introduction on this topic and The Big Picture Story Bible for an excellent treatment of this at the most basic level.)

Not Just Hearers

In this week’s message, entitled “Responding to Correction”, we looked at Proverbs 9:7-12. We heard how responding to correction can be a matter of life and death. To better understand the implications of this, let’s consider these questions:

  • When are you tempted to make decisions based on yourself rather than who God is? In these kinds of decisions how could you better focus on God’s relevance?
  • When are you most tempted to consider correction as relatively worthless?
  • When are you most tempted to respond to correction with anger?
  • When tempted to respond to correction dismissively or in anger, how can you better position yourself to chose to respond wisely?

Let us pray this week for the humility and love to seek wisdom from above as it is conveyed to us by others.

Not Just Hearers

This week’s message was entitled “Words that Work”. From Ephesians 4:29-32 we heard that forgiven hearts produce constructive words. In order to better understand the outworkings of this in our lives, consider these questions:

  • Have you tended to think of your words (and their power) as a squirt gun, air-soft gun, paintball gun, or bazooka? Why?
  • What does Scripture have to say about the power of our words?
  • When are you typically tempted to speak a “corrupt” word?  In these moments what would “putting off and putting on” look like?
  • How does the gospel affect the way that you see those that you are speaking to? How could you make this a greater focal point?
  • In what ways does our relationship with Christ help us in speaking words of grace?

Let’s pray this week that the Spirit would empower us to speak the grace of the gospel with fitting words that build up.

(For further study on this topic, we recommend the article “Speaking Redemptively” by Paul Tripp.)
