A Prayer for President Obama

Like most of you, our office staff was attentive at the television yesterday at noon as we witnessed the historic inauguration of President Obama.  Also, I’m sure like many of you we then took some time to pray for our President and his administration.

C.J. Mahaney, President of Sovereign Grace Ministries had a similar opportunity during a time with John Piper, Al Mohler, Mark Dever, Ligon Duncan, and Thabiti Anyabwile.  He writes about that time here.  He also commends an excellent model for prayer for President Obama given by Al Mohler.  It’s worth reflecting on and emmulating.  You can find Dr. Mohler’s prayer here.

Please continue to keep our new President and our nation in your prayers.

Cabin Fever?

Looking for a way to beat cabin fever as temperatures dip?  Try listening to some thought-provoking, faith-building messages!  Where would I find such messages, you ask?  Let me point you to a couple of excellent sources (in case you were looking for ones to supplement our own audio archive.)

Sovereign Grace Ministries opened up their message vault at no cost for downloads several months ago.  This made hundreds of messages given at Sovereign Grace conferences, seminars, and other events (like New Attitude, Worship Conferences, Leadership Conferences, and Together for the Gospel) available for free, as well as sets of messages on a variety of topics like marriage, parenting, business, and evangelism.  What a gift!

Another resource with literally thousands of wonderful messages can be found at Monergism.com’s MP3 library.  They offer a virtual Who’s Who of many of the best pastors and teachers available today.

The messages at these sites will fill your playlist and warm your affections for God till well after any winter weather blows through…

Please Pray for Gene

Please pray for Gene this weekend as he travels to Roanoke, VA to serve our sister church Sovereign Grace Community Church.  Gene will be spending time with Bruce Chick and Spencer Vaughn, the church’s pastors, as well as time with other leaders and speaking to the church Sunday morning.  Let’s pray that Gene will be empowered by God to serve this church as they seek to continue building a culture of grace.

Ken Delage will be accompanying Gene to Roanoke in order to take the oral portion of his ordination exam, so he would be appreciative of our prayers as well!

Thanking God for our Staff

As we have transitioned from last year to this year, we found it fitting as a pastoral team to take space on the blog to thank those who serve behind the scenes at the church office and building.  Quite simply, they help transform our good intentions into action and our plans into reality.  We are so grateful for each of the folks God has provided to serve us and each of you.

In case you missed any of the posts you can go to them clicking on the links below.

If you’d like to get to know the pastors and staff even more you can also go here.

Mmmm…broccoli!

Today we celebrated 5 January staff Birthdays with a pizza lunch.  Matthew (he turned 19 on Wednesday!) received his own veggie pie, though something possessed Doug to also try a slice.

I guess that’s what gives his hair its nice healthy shine…

Also celebrating this month are Nikki Jones, James and Adam Brewer (Adam volunteers helping Mike with the building a couple days each week), and Aaron Campbell.

Holding Up Our Arms - Riette Kruger

Apart from our wives, no one does more to support us in serving you than the folks working in the office.  So we wanted to take this opportunity to thank them for their behind-the-scenes roles.

It has been a wonderful blessing to officially begin working with Riette this year. Almost two years ago she took on all of registration for our revive conference as a volunteer. Now that she has her working papers and is allowed to receive a paycheck, she has moved into the role of my assistant. This means she helps me coordinate all details of our regional conferences (like last year’s youthcamp and couples conference and 2009’s upcoming Men’s Conference), for which I am most grateful! She also has a primary role working with ongoing projects like our bulletins, website, and blog. Thanks Riette, for throwing yourself into your work to serve us both as a volunteer and now as paid staff! -Aaron

What Aaron is Reading

The Prodigal God, Recovering the Heart of the Christian Faith by Timothy Keller

After reading a favorable review from a source I wouldn’t have suspected to endorse this book I was intrigued and ordered a copy to check it out for myself.  When it arrived I flipped through the table of contents and found myself suddenly shuffling it to the top of my reading list.  I’m so glad that I did!

I have just finished the book and found myself encouraged throughout.  It is a study of the story of the familiar parable of the lost son, but Keller derives the title from the definition of prodigal: “1. Recklessly extravagant, 2. Having spent everything” and applying it to the father in the story.  The insights he mines (especially regarding the father and the older son) seemed to flip on the lights of an already familiar and favorite story, adding rich layer upon rich layer to what I thought I understood.  His simple and straightforward explanations made me think “why haven’t I seen this before?”

I’m grateful for a fuller understanding of this wonderful passage of Scripture and found myself convicted and encouraged several times during my reading.  Because it is accessible in length and engaging in style I don’t hesitate to commend this to anyone.  This is the most grace filled and broadly helpful book I have read this year.

Leadership Team v. Wives

The pastors and wives community group enjoyed a gingerbread house competition on Friday night.  It was guys against girls with the winning team to receive a future lunch provided and prepared by the losing team (not much of a prize for the ladies, but those were the agreed upon terms…)

Can you guess which group decorated each house?

Somehow, the ladies’ Hawaiian luau themed house won over the judges more than the guys’ West Virginia shack.  Perhaps the ladies pre-planned strategy and extra supplies had something to do with it (contrasted with the guys deciding what to make a couple minutes into the 35 minute competition time.)

Hopefully the ladies like hot dogs…
