Sovereign Grace Ministries - Helping Haiti

This note is from Pat Ennis, Executive Director of Sovereign Grace Ministries:

Friends,

In response to the devastating earthquake that occurred in Haiti on Tuesday, Sovereign Grace Ministries has opened a Disaster Relief fund to help deliver food, medicine, and other needed aid there. We will distribute the funds we raise primarily through existing ministry contacts we have on the island—both in Haiti and the Dominican Republic—who are already involved in relief efforts.

If you want to join us in our support of these efforts, you can donate to the Disaster Relief fund on our website or by calling 800.736.2202. On behalf of our friends in Haiti, thank you for considering this opportunity to give.

Regardless of your ability to make a donation, please join us in praying that those affected by the earthquake would receive aid quickly, and that despite these hardships the gospel would continue to go forward in that nation.

With appreciation,

Patrick Ennis
Executive Director
Sovereign Grace Ministries

A Note from Gene

Hi Friends,

We just closed the books for 2008, and once again I find myself at a loss for words to describe the gratitude in my heart for you.  During what has been a difficult year for many, God has used your gifts to extend His gospel in some wonderful ways.  We’ve not only welcomed numerous guests each Sunday, but have added four new community groups and embraced 112 new members.  With rooms filled to overflowing, we also added a classroom wing and in the process of expanding the foyer, seminar room and kitchen.  All of this in the midst of economic downturn!  By God’s grace, we’ve helped others with over $20,000 in benevolence and gifts and invested $153,000 in evangelism and missions–seeing the Gospel extended to the ends of the world!

So as you receive your statement of contributions in the days ahead, please consider the great good that your faithful giving has done in extending God’s care in very personal ways.  On behalf of the pastors, thank you for honoring God through your life and giving.  To Him be glory forever and ever!

With deep appreciation,
Gene

An Invitation and a Visit

After the meeting Sunday, Rich Rogness introduced me to a man from Dallas that is in town this month on business.  Rich met him last week to discuss rental property.  So, Rich, seeing that he was away from home for several weeks, invited him to church on Sunday.  He came and seemed to enjoy it and at one point I noticed a few other people getting his contact information.

I so appreciate Rich’s heart to welcome this man into his life and invite him to KingsWay.  Rich also told me about a recent opportunity to share the gospel with a salesperson that came to his home.  Thanks Rich for being a great example of a faithful gospel witness and letting the Gospel overflow from your heart to your interactions with people.  Your example inspires and motivates me and I want to be like you!

And thank you church for consistently being so welcoming to our guests whether they are from out-of-town or just down the street!  God is using your loving actions and caring words to work in people’s lives as was evidenced by the many folks in the recent new members video giving testimony to the welcome and community they have experienced with you.

Gospel Translations

This past Sunday Morning, we showed a video about Gospel Translations, a group devoted to making “biblical books and articles freely accessible in as many languages as possible.”  We are very excited about how God is beginning to use this ministry.  If you’d like to view the video, go here.  For more information on how you can participate, visit www.gospeltranslations.org.

A Testimony: Basketball Evangelism

This past Sunday afternoon, in the sweltering heat, I played a couple games of basketball with Alan, Rob, and James Denison and 2 other guys at Rockwood Park.  After having fun playing a few very competitive (and tiring) games, a few guys left and Alan and I decided to “throw in the towel” for the day.  As I am chugging some water, trying to catch my breath, I notice Alan making his way to a bench, where one of the other guys was sitting.  Alan began to draw him out about his church background and if he had found a church in the area.  As I listened, I wondered if and how this might transition to talking about the Gospel.  In a very gentle and winsome way, Alan transitioned the conversation toward the reality that life and salvation is not about going to church but it’s about a relationship with Jesus.  He began to explain to our new friend what this meant, while briefly sharing his testimony in small, understandable chunks.  Alan and I had the privilege of sharing the gospel with him over a 15 minute conversation.  I so appreciated Alan’s heart to spend a few minutes (even when tired with many other things he could have left to do) talking with this man about the Gospel and taking a genuine interest.   Alan got our friend’s phone number and planned to call him to follow up and invite him to a Sunday Meeting and we had the opportunity to pray for him as well.

To our knowledge, our new friend did not repent and believe there on the spot but we trust that God will use our conversation to help him see his need for the Gospel and perhaps someday he will be saved.  Thank you Alan for your faithfulness and boldness in evangelism and for not giving in to your sinful (and tired) flesh.  You provoke me by your example.

A Testimony: Sharing the Gospel With a Friend

Listen to this wonderful testimony from Danielle Ognibene:

“Last weekend, I had the opportunity to talk about the Lord with a good friend.  Over the past year, my friend has been asking questions about the Christianity. My family and I believed that God was working in her heart for a while.  I thought sharing the “How Good Are You?” booklet with her would help her understand salvation.  After we finished reading through it, she prayed to accept Jesus as her Lord and Savior. Last Sunday, she visited KingsWay again with us and felt that Mr. Campbell’s message gave her a better understanding of eternity.  This week, she shared with her parents that she became a Christian.  We’re praying for her and her family!”

Danielle, thank you for your faithfulness to come alongside of your friend and allow God to use you in proclaiming the Gospel!

Getting Thrown Out of the Social Security Office

This morning I had the task of going to the local Social Security Office to get my daughter, Lexi’s, Social Security Number. Upon walking in, I was confronted with the reality that this was going to take a long time. The place was packed with people. I took my number, found a seat and began reading my Bible. About 2 minutes later, a woman walked in, took and number and sat next to me. I kept reading but wondered if I was supposed to share the gospel with her. Tucked inside my Bible was a “How Good Are You?” tract in case there was an opportunity to talk with someone. The woman seemed pretty content talking to a friend in the next seat over. When her friend left, I began to talk with her a little but after talking for a few more minutes, there was an awkward silence. I believe God wanted me to try to get into a Gospel conversation with her.

I started by asking on a scale from 1 to 10, “How good are you?” She answered. Then I spoke and she began scream boisterously and was raging mad. The security guard came over and immediately threw me out of the place. Not only was I embarrassed and humiliated but I didn’t get the Social Security Number. What a wasted trip!

(record scratch noise!!!) Hang on a minute. Back to reality. That last part didn’t really happen. I didn’t get thrown out of the Social Security Office. She didn’t become angry. This is what my mind imagined would happen if I shared with her. In that moment, I let fear begin to grip my heart and extinguish the passion for the gospel going forth. A sinful fear of man was taking hold of my heart.

I’m grateful that God helped me to overcome fear and this opportunity was not lost. By His grace I pulled out the tract and began to ask her about herself and how good she thought she was. I’d love to be able to report that we got through the whole booklet and she fell down on her knees and repented and believed in Christ, but she didn’t. We actually had a brief, pleasant exchange and I asked, “Would you mind if we talk about this little booklet further?” She said, “Yeah, I’m OK. I’d rather not. But thank you.” I responded, “OK. That’s fine” and asked if she would like to keep it to read later. She kept it.

We went on to discuss other topics and didn’t get back to the Gospel but that is OK. I believe I did what God wanted me to do in trying to share the gospel. And, how wonderful! I didn’t get thrown out of the place and the conversation was easier than I thought it would be!

The Gospel Message is far too valuable to not be shared because of fear. May we be people who pray every day for open doors (Col. 4:3) to share the gospel with people around us AND may we be bold and walk through doors when they open.
