Aaron Campbell Announcement

Announcement and Request for Prayer:

As we shared a few weeks ago, KingsWay has experienced a financial downturn over the last year or two due to the effects of the current economy as well as transitions within our own body.  A year ago the pastors chose to reduce their compensation by 20% to meet our 2010 budget and since then we have continued to make additional budget cuts throughout this year to keep on track.

Early this summer as we were making further tweaks to the budget, we realized that any further reductions would need to again reduce pastoral salaries.  At that time God gave me peace and faith to come off staff if another sizable cut was needed.  I didn’t share that with the other guys at the time, but continued to pray that further cuts would not be necessary.

However a couple months ago, it became apparent that we would need to again readjust the budget significantly.  At that time I let the other pastors know that God was giving me faith to step off of staff at least temporarily and work for my brother Andrew in his home improvement business.

In the midst of investigating such a transition, Colleen and I met with some friends last month at the Sovereign Grace Ministries Pastors Conference, who challenged us regarding whether God might be using this season to consider other possible redirections that we otherwise would not entertain, such as relocating to another church in need of pastoral support.

Though I have been aware of needs in other cities, and even been approached once or twice about them, I had essentially dismissed them out of hand.  We really like it here.  We love this church that we’ve had the privilege to serve the last 11-½ years and our many friends here!  Last year we moved next door to my brother.  Our girls have significant time with their grandparents each week - a relationship they both enjoy immensely - and is also a very practical help to Colleen as she struggles with back pain daily.

All of this has left us in a very comfortable position - to the point of not really considering other things.  So we were challenged when asked to consider if our personal transition might be planned by God for something different than just saving KingsWay some money.  If nothing else we became aware at that conference that God was after something in our hearts.  We had drawn boundaries around what we thought God would ask us to do.

We still don’t know where exactly God is leading us in all of this.  What we do know right now is that the church finances don’t allow us to ask these questions while serving full time.  So I will transition to part-time in January for a couple of months.  Even that reduced salary will need to come from savings at this point, but the other pastors and I all felt it important that I remain on staff until at least March 1 to serve you and the team during the helpful process of the mediation we’ve been walking through as a church, and to transition roles and responsibilities.

God may then have us to relocate to another city to help pastor somewhere else or He may have me work with Andrew for an indefinite period with an eye to returning to staff at KingsWay when finances allow.  We’d be most grateful for your prayers during this season.  Our biggest request would be for clarity of God’s direction.  We have much faith that He is using this season for His purposes, and like all of you we’re eager to see exactly what each of those purposes are.

Now, I want to speak very plainly to a couple of possible questions or speculations that I trust might not pop into heads given another season of church life.  None of the other guys have initiated these discussions or asked me to step back.  This is something I believe God placed in my heart for such a time as this.  The response of the other men on staff was surprise and many questions.

This is not a statement against the other pastors in any way.  If anything, it should be heard as a ringing endorsement of my support for them and willingness to submit myself to their leadership and care.  I trust them.  There have been times over past years where I have seen my particular role as one that was indispensable to this team and church.  God in His mercy has helped me get over myself in these ways over the last couple of years.

To the best I know my own heart, this is no attempt to escape the current circumstances we face as a pastoral team.  It has unquestioningly been a very challenging season for all of us.  And as I mentioned a minute ago, I am grateful for the tremendous help Peacemakers has already been and I am committed to staying engaged with the mediation process and with you as a church body during this season.  The biggest dynamic our current circumstances have factored into all this is that our finances have made staff changes necessary.  I wish this decision could be totally removed from our current context so that it would not be confused with it - actually I prayed that we wouldn’t reach this level of need at all, but this is where we are at!

I doubt most of you will notice much change at all in these next couple of months as my participation on Sundays will be unchanged.  (And to cut off any speculation about our family’s absence next weekend - we will be visiting Colleen’s family next week to celebrate Christmas with them in PA.)

We are not being forced out and we are not seeking to flee, but we are earnestly seeking what God would have us to do above all else.  We’re entrusting ourselves and this church to the One who is at work far beyond our limited vision - and who is more jealous for His bride, the church, than any of us will ever be.  The other pastors have let me know their preference for us to stay, but more than anything they desire us to hear God speak clearly and for us to follow wherever He leads.  Whatever your preference might be, I ask you to pray the same thing for us.  Thank you.

Update from Keith and Gene

From Keith to KingsWay:
As you may already know, my family and I relocated to KingsWay from Sovereign Grace Church in Chesapeake this past September to start a residency for evaluation and equipping to lead a church plant.  It has been an absolute joy for our entire family to get to know many of you and serve the Lord alongside you.  God’s grace is so clearly at work here, and we thank God for this opportunity!

Planting a church is a huge undertaking, and leading a plant requires a pastor to be well equipped for the task.  Over these past six months, God has been refining me and equipping me in key areas - particular the preaching of the Word and administration.  Apart from this season of receiving specific and much needed help, I cannot conceive of how God could have met me in the ways He has.  I am so thankful for these pastors and for each of you.  Your feedback has been very encouraging and helpful.  As it stands today, I am trusting God for additional, needed help - especially in the area of administration.  This has been an historic weakness for me, and God has highlighted it once again through the pastors and through my opportunity to lead the Resolved ministry.  Given the administrative demands of church-planting, I believe God has new convictions and habits to build into me.  In light of that, I am not ready to plant a church at this point. But I am trusting God to continue this work of training and equipping so that I will be prepared for the future.

Thank you for your encouragement and prayers… and for the ways you have embraced me and my family.  Please continue to join us in prayer - to the God who completes every good work He begins.  Please pray for wisdom, as we seek to discern the call God has on my life and to discern His timetable.  We count every week spent with you a blessing.  And we look forward with faith and joy to Christ: who has gone before us, and who oversees every detail of our lives.  As you pray for us, and as we pray for you, let’s take great courage that each of our days are in His hands… while we have breath, let’s all be looking for ways to bear eternal fruit for His kingdom.

From Gene on behalf of pastors:
Last month I asked you to give us feedback on how Keith’s ministry has impacted you.  Thanks those who have provided thoughts, which have been very helpful in considering the way forward.  The area most of you have connected with Keith is in his preaching, and many of you shared how his love for God’s Word helped and encouraged you in specific ways.  The single adults also experienced Keith’s leadership in the Resolved ministry.  He brings a love for community and evangelism.  Some shared some specific ways where his administrative leadership needed to improve.  A number of you have also received personal care & encouragement from Keith and expressed how wise and meaningful that care has been.

The reason SGM invests in church-based residencies is that the day to day life of a local church provides the best arena for seeing where a pastor is strong and where growth is necessary.  Your feedback has helped Keith and the pastors to establish two things. First, we agree with Keith that more preparation is important before planting.  This is not because we are reluctant to take a risk, but because we have seen that planting a church is one of the most demanding tasks a pastor can undertake.  Making sure he is prepared from the beginning is a practical way we can extend care to Keith & his family and confidence to those participating in the church plant.  So your input was important to the decision to postpone the church plant.  Second, the pastors recognize significant gifts in preaching and leadership in Keith’s life that we believe will position him to be an effective church planter.  He has a gift of faith and the ability to care for people along with an evangelistic heart to reach the lost.  Since Keith is receiving care and training from the pastors with a genuine and humble heart, we believe he is in process to be prepared to plant a church.  What a joy it would be to send a team from KingsWay to impact another city with the Gospel!  But since the funds SGM is providing for Keith’s residency ends in May, we will need to trust God for resources to make that happen.  We’ll talk more about that in a couple of weeks in relation to our partnership fund, but please pray with us as we seek clarity and provision for this next step.  Thanks!

Sons and Daughters

Looking for a way to keep the truths we studied a year ago in our adoption series fresh and regularly before you? Check out the album mentioned below, available in our book shoppe.

By C.J. Mahaney

Congratulations to my friend Bob Kauflin whose album Sons and Daughters has won the 2009 Worship Compilation of the Year award in the Worship Leader Magazine Readers’ Choice Awards.

I love this album!

And apparently many others love this album as well.

What I love about the album is the theological lyrics on the theme of God’s adopting grace.

So why did Bob focus this project on the doctrine of spiritual adoption? A while back on his blog, Bob wrote this:

The project came out of a perceived lack of songs that help us meditate on the unfathomable love God has shown us in adopting us through Jesus Christ (Eph. 1:5). We are now part of God’s family—in Christ we will forever be the objects of God’s particular and passionate mercy and love. We are not only forgiven, we are co-heirs with Christ, and never again have to doubt God’s care for us. That biblical reality, rather than leaving us focused on ourselves, drives us once again to proclaim the greatness of the God whose grace turns hopeless rebels into precious children.

We need songs on this important topic—especially worship albums for individual and corporate worship. In his classic book Knowing God, J.I. Packer writes:

If you want to judge how well a person understands Christianity, find out how much he makes of the thought of being God’s child, and having God as his Father. If this is not the thought that prompts and controls his worship and prayers and his whole outlook on life, it means that he does not understand Christianity very well at all. For everything that Christ taught, everything that makes the New Testament new, and better than the Old, everything that is distinctively Christian as opposed to merely Jewish, is summed up in the knowledge of the Fatherhood of God. “Father” is the Christian name for God.…Our understanding of Christianity cannot be better than our grasp of adoption. (pp. 201–202)

I highly recommend Sons and Daughters. It will help convince you of God’s passionate and personal love for you. This album will remind you of God’s adopting grace, a theme that should prompt and control our worship. What better album to do this than Sons and Daughters.Congratulations to Bob and to all the musicians and songwriters that made this album possible!

Sunday Meeting Canceled!

Church family and friends,

God has a way of changing our plans at times, doesn’t he? After being unable to meet last weekend, I was especially looking forward to meeting together tomorrow. Sunday is my favorite day of the week!

Due to the continued inclement weather, however, all Saturday and Sunday events have been cancelled. I’m grateful that ultimately the weather testifies to our Father’s sovereign control over all things (Ps. 147:16), reminding us of the divine power and authority at work in every detail of our lives. No matter the situation, He’s on the throne!

Here are a couple suggestions for redeeming the time this weekend:

  1. Gather as a family to sing, read Scripture or pray together. It doesn’t have to be formal. Have the youngest family member read a few verses (Ps. 145-150 are good places to start!), then talk about what they say about God, our need for Him, and His care for us.
  2. Invite a friend or neighbor to come over for a movie or to watch the Superbowl. Snow days are a great opportunity to reach out to unbelievers with the love of Jesus.
  3. Throw a few logs in the fireplace and dive into a good devotional book that will help you know and love the Savior. If you’re like me, there’s a large “waiting to be read” stack on the bookshelf. We’ll see how far I can get through C.S. Lewis’ Screwtape Letters!
  4. FOR GUYS ONLY - Get up early and make breakfast for your family or roommates. I personally recommend a good Southern approach, including omelets, grits, bacon and toast.

I pray God refreshes each of you this weekend as we rest in His sovereignty. As my good friend Gene would say, “Snow is God’s way of inserting a little margin into our lives.” And for that I give thanks!

Grace to you,
Matthew

New Members

This past Sunday we had the joy of welcoming 11 new members to the KingsWay family!  It is always a joy to celebrate God’s work among us in such specific ways.  Click on the image below to watch the video introducing our new members.

Update from Gene

Last weekend, Liz and I had the privilege of joining our friends in Sovereign Grace Church of Chesapeake, VA, for two historic events.  On Saturday evening, the pastors and wives took an evening to honor Keith & Joanna Breault.  Keith has served as senior pastor for the past four years and will be sent out to KingsWay this Sunday.  (The Breaults will arrive Sunday afternoon to begin a nine month church planting residency in preparation for launching a new church next summer.)  It was deeply encouraging to hear each of the pastors & wives share how Keith & Joanna have been a means of grace in their lives.

On Sunday morning, I had the joy of  bringing a charge to Eric as he was installed as the new senior pastor.  I shared Paul’s charge to Timothy in 2 Timothy 4:1 to “Preach the Word!”  We have a high view of preaching as a family of churches, and I was privileged to emphasize that priority and to encourage the church to respond to Eric’s leadership through responding and praying for him.  Eric’s father, Bob Hughes, one of the founding pastors of the church, joined us in praying for Eric.  As the church gathered for a reception following the meeting, there was a tangible sense of joy & faith for this new season.

Please pray for Eric & Marie Hughes as Eric steps into this new role.  And pray for Keith & Joanna and their children Emma, Gordon, Henry & Peter–along with the baby “on the way” to be delivered in Midlothian in early 2010!  The Breaults are leaving behind all that’s familiar to follow God’s call on their lives.  Please join us in providing a warm welcome as they arrive!
