It was a joy having Carolyn McCulley join all the women of KingsWay for the Radical Womanhood Conference last weekend! Carolyn is the author of Radical Womanhood: Feminine Faith in a Feminist World.
Throughout the weekend, Carolyn presented a historical overview of feminism as it relates to the Church and to biblical truth. She wove in her own personal journey from feminism to faith and offered practical encouragement to women making the same journey.
This workshop equipped the ladies in understanding how to graciously and effectively apply the gospel to the prevailing worldview in our culture. Knowing the history of feminism and its absorption into our culture is helpful for realizing how radical it is to living today according to God’s Word!
But the weekend was not “all work and no play”! The ladies enjoyed a “Construct Your Own Dessert” following the meeting on Friday night, and they kicked off Saturday morning with a pancake breakfast! Delilah - AKA Prize Girl - joined the ladies at different points throughout the weekend, spreading joy through her gift of giving! All in all, it was a memorable weekend.
Carolyn’s messages are now available online

NEXT is a conference this May 23-26 in Baltimore with a passion for transferring the gospel to the next generation. Like New Attitude before it, NEXT’s primary goal is to connect attendees with Jesus Christ Himself, as well as His work on their behalf.
Where NEXT diverges a bit from New Attitude’s game plan is in who is being encouraged to attend. NEXT is not limited to a particular age group or marital status but open to all who desire to know Jesus better and share Him with others, whether you are 18, 35, or 60.
Get lots more info about NEXT, including conference rates and registration, at thisisnext.org.
KingsWay has a limited block of rooms near the convention center that will be available only till the end of this month. The cost is $440 per room for the 3 nights of the conference (for up to 4 people depending on the room chosen). The Baltimore Marriott also has a $24/day parking fee that the NEXT staff is trying to get waived/reduced but no guarantees on that! If you are interested in purchasing a room (by yourself or with a couple friends), contact Riette at the church office before March 29th for more information.

Last week, I had the privilege to accompany 14 17-23 year-olds from KingsWay to “The Clash”, a Sovereign Grace Christian Worldview Camp at Messiah College in Grantham, PA. Since returning on Saturday, numerous people have asked me, “How was it?” My typical response has been, “An amazing experience. My head and heart are full (in a good way). I built meaningful friendships with our people, as well as those from other churches.” I am so grateful to God for Jeff Purswell and Nathan Sasser, who organized and taught at “The Clash”. Also, getting to hear Dr. D.A. Carson for a whole day was quite a blessing. This was a week full of sound doctrine taught for the purpose of worship and foundation-building. Add onto that rich Biblical Fellowship with new and old friends. What an amazing week we had!
Listen to this testimony from Amy Roberts:
“Monday after ‘The Clash’ I got into a conversation with a Catholic co-worker over how to know which religion has the right perspective, the nature of man, homosexuality, the reliability of the Bible, and more. To make a long story short, a conversation he and I had two weeks ago caused him to ask questions of the purity of the Catholic church. Equipped with Nathan Sasser’s (who taught several times during our week) worldview evaluation tactics, I quickly observed that his worldview was based on self, not God, and thought of more than a few ways to correct his faulty theology. But what Nathan said about Scripture being self-authenticating (and it’s redeeming POWER) came to the front of my mind. I mentioned to him that many of his questions could be answered by simply going to the source of Christianity: the Bible. Today I gave him a paperback ESV and recommended he start in John and read Romans 3. He took the Bible and wrote down my suggestions.
It’s not every day that your co-worker is eager to read the Bible and find truth. How kind of God to give me an opportunity to interact with someone so hungry directly after a week-long worldview/apologetics/bible doctrine conference! I don’t think the dialogue between my co-worker and I is over. I’m praying for wisdom when to speak and when to listen, when to let the Spirit work apart from my mouth and when the Spirit wants to work through my words. I trust that God is completely sovereign to call Bryan to Himself at any point. I’m just praying that He does.”
Thank you Amy for applying what you learned and for being faithful to God by engaging with your friend about issues that matter! I’m looking forward to hearing how God is at work in you and through you, as well as the other people that went to “The Clash”. The Clash will be taking place again in 2010.

It’s been about a month since we returned from Youth Camp at JMU. Wow! Hard to believe Summer is almost over. Though the many songs, conversations and late night snacks are a distant memory, I’m so thankful God used the conference to lay spiritual foundations that will last for years to come. Here’s one testimony from Savannah Smith, a 16 year-old young lady from KingsWay.
“During worship God really touched my heart, and challenged me to be obedient to him and not let fear of man control me. He not only tested me once, but twice, and I’m grateful for both opportunities. The first time was when He told me to go to the ministry mic. I had gone up the night before with the same word but had not been able to share it, and I thought going up a second time with the same word would be “against the rules.” But God was urging me and with some encouragement from a friend I went up and was able to share my word. The second testing was still during worship. As we sang the last two songs, God really opened my eyes to see what he did on the cross for me. Completely overwhelmed I felt led to kneel down before God, it took a little while to swallow my pride. So I slowly kneeled down on the ground, my entire body was shaking and my breath was short and all the words I sang didn’t come out, closed my eyes and I just reached out my hands. When I did this I felt God’s pleasure and it brought tears of joy and thankfulness to my eyes. I wasn’t focusing on what others thought of me anymore, I was focused on God’s presence.”
Thanks, Savannah, for honoring God through your example!

9000 oz Mountain Dew
1400 Flavor-Ice Pops
63 lbs of M&Ms
48 lbs of Skittles
257 teens
194 parents
45 volunteers
7 churches
3 days
4 sessions
1 common goal—to encounter God
This past July 4th weekend, teens and parents from 7 regional churches (across Virginia, West Virginia, and North Carolina), came together for three days, ready to encounter God at YouthCamp ‘08. Each session included an episode of “The Adam Campbell Show” (game show from Charlotte’s late, late, late-night local access channel) followed by worship and a message.
Starting off Thursday night at a late 9pm, we loaded everyone up with some Mountain Dew and hit the ground running. Mickey Connolly opened the weekend with a message called “Am I Saved?”. The session ended with a time of ministry where several teens prayed to commit their lives to Christ!
After breakfast each morning time was carved out for teens to be alone with their parents for some face2face time so they could discuss the previous days messages. Friday morning’s message, “Honoring God and Parents” was yet another means of grace as God spoke through Keith Breault (even if he didn’t understand the question theme).
Afternoon activities offered an opportunity for games in the rec center, including the chance to challenge the pastors in 3-on-3 basketball. Mickey Connolly and Joe Lechner (both from CrossWay Community Church in Charlotte) and Bruce Chick (from Sovereign Grace Church of Roanoke) represented the pastors well by remaining undefeated throughout the afternoon.
Friday evening Gene Emerson shared a message on worldliness entitled “What in the World?” Afterwards, we headed to a nearby hill with Mountain Dew and Flavor-Ice in hand to watch some 4th of July fireworks.
After face2face time Saturday morning, Joe Lechner shared a message called “Is It Worth Your Life?” about the mission God has for each of us. After lunch and saying good bye to some new friends to connect with on Facebook, everyone headed for home.
By the end of the weekend it was evident that God has answered our prayer—that we would encounter Him. Not only did we encounter Him, but we were able to build relationships, minister to one another, drink a lot of Mountain Dew, and even have fun.

Early this past Wednesday morning, 85 singles and young married couples from KingsWay returned from the New Attitude Conference. From the Corporate Worship, to the fun with new and old friends, to meditating on Scripture and discussing application to our lives in Family Groups, to the main session messages, to many other things… this Conference was an amazing blessing from God. I am definitely coming back with a renewed excitement to delight in God’s Word daily.
I asked some of the folks that went from KingsWay, “What was your favorite part of the conference?”
Here are a few responses:
“Through C.J.’s first message I became very aware of how much I listen to myself. I plan to read the scriptures with intent to speak to myself and to God much more than I do now. I want to understand God’s Word better, so that I can more effectively live my life for the spread of the Gospel. I also wanted to discover new ways to get more out of the scriptures in my daily quiet times.”
“During our Community Groups we took time to meditate on Scripture in a structured way. It was very helpful to learn how to more effectively meditate on Scripture this way and is probably the most valuable thing I will take back from NA and apply to my life. I have gained a noticeable appreciation for God’s Word; and now, not only have I made a plan for devotionals, but I have greater motivation to make it happen. All I can say is that I have learned a lot, and will definitely need to listen to the messages again.”
“I feel like I dug deeper instead of climbing to a height. I love the amazing teaching – it is such a privilege to sit under each of the men who spoke. In worship before Josh Harris spoke, I sensed God imparting to me a much deeper understanding (but FAR from truly understanding!) of the fact the He is worthy…of my life, my death – anything I have to offer. He was slain for me, who is so unworthy. As I struggle to overcome sin, as I face opposition and ridicule for being a Christian, as I suffer in this world and seek to honor Him in my response, I hope to keep in front of me those words – He is worthy.”
The 8 main session messages are available for free download here. They are definitely worth a listen or two or three.
Next year, New Attitude is in Baltimore (only 3 hours away). If you are single (any age) or are married (in your 20s or early 30s), plan on joining us! We’ll have more information in a couple months.
